Gilbert, 14th Earl, is remembered for roasting the Abbot of Crossragual on a spit over a fire for refusing to sign over to him the deeds of the Abbey properties. The Abbot was rescued and survived.
John, 16th Lord, travelled to marry the beautiful 2nd daughter of Sir James Campbell. After too much drink he was tricked and woke up the following morning in bed with the ugly sister. On discovering his situation he made haste and fled with the other daughter, only to discover later that his bride of one night was pregnant. Consequently the Campbells acquired the lands of the Macnaughtons in 1611, citing incest.
The Campbell lands in the 1700’s covered almost 10 percent of Scotland as did the Stewarts.
